Performances inspired by Hollywood pop icons highlighted this year’s celebration of Recoletos de Cebu Sportsfest last August 18.
The St. Ezekiel team won the dance palabas competition for Josenian employees after presenting a Michael Jackson-inspired dance number. It is composed of faculty members from the College of Engineering, Junior High School, and Recoletos Industrial and Technological Training Center (RITTC). Below is a video of their winning performance.
The second placer for the dance palabas is the Mt. Carmel team, composed of employees from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Education (COE), College of Information, Computer, and Communications Technology (CICCT), and Talavera House of Prayer. The team’s icon was American singer Jennifer Lopez.
San Agustin placed third after its Shakira-inspired number. The said team is composed of employees from the Senior High School, Center for Religious Education (CRE), and School of Law.
The Recoletos de Cebu Sportsfest is an annual gathering of Josenian administrators, staff, and teachers from all year levels. The event is the employee version of the University days and Intramurals for the students.
Five teams competed with each other, namely: San Jose (SJ), San Agustin (SA), San Nicolas (SN), San Ezekiel (SE) and Mt. Carmel (MC).
Aside from the dance palabas, a pageant search for Mr. and Miss Sportsfest was also conducted. Below is a list of the winners:

1st Runner-up: Mr. Benedict Al Candia (MC) and Ms. Rhea Mae Telen (MC)
2nd Runner-up: Mr. James Anthony Austria (SJ) and Ms. Rose Mary Mosende (SA)
After the announcement of winners for the two competition, the Josenian professors/teachers and staff danced Zumba, which they named “The Josenian Way”. In the afternoon, different sports events simultaneously took place namely basketball (Coliseum), volleyball (Open Gym 2 & 3), lawn tennis (Open Gym 4), table tennis (Recoletos Coliseum Lobby), badminton (Open Gym 1) and chess (Nuestra Senora dela Salud Canteen).
Each team also hand-picked representatives which participated in the Josenian Got Talent, a talent search among USJ-R employees. MC representative Corina Encabo sang a mash-up of Despacito, which led her to victory. Her first to fourth runners-up were the representatives of San Agustin, San Jose, San Ezekiel, and San Nicolas respectively.
The series of events kicked off with a holy mass at the Recoletos Coliseum which was presided by VP Student Welfare Rev. Fr. Roy B. Baluarte, OAR. After which, a parade inside the Basak campus then followed. Vice President for Administration Rev. Fr. Rouel Sia, OAR gave the welcome address and rationale of the activity. It was then followed by the lighting of the torch and Oath of Amateurism by Jose Peace Fuentes and Atty. Jesus Velez, respectively.
The Red SJ was composed of the administrators and office personnel staff. The Yellow SA was composed of personnel from the Senior High School, Center for Religious Education and School of Law. The College of Commerce and Nursing, Grade School, and CPA Review Center are the members of the Green SN. Meanwhile, the Blue SE was composed of staff members from the College of Engineering, Junior High School, and Recoletos Industrial and Technological Training Center. Finally, the Orange MC was composed of personnel from the CAS, CICCT, and Talavera House of Prayer.
