USJ-R IE Students Granted with Utility Model

August 28, 2017Le Roy Gerald Sarchez

Five Industrial Engineering(IE) students of the University were awarded with utility model by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines on their invention.

Ralph Laurence Hugo, Brillmont Tampus,  May Flor Garcia, Angelica Concept  Paras and Richard  Regasajo created an Oxygen Suppression Device, a Utility Model Device. The device was created in compliance with their Industrials Materials  and Process subject with the advisorship of the Chairman of the Industrial Engineering Department,  Dr. Dennis Anthony Kilongkilong.

The purpose of the device is to put out the flame of a candle when melted or when it collapsed to prevent fire. The invention was done in less than a month despite the problems they encountered in the conceptualization of the design.

The students are currently on their 5th year level in college but the invention was created when they were 3rd year. During the filling process, they were assisted by USJ-R Innovation and Technology Support  Office (ITSO) and Center  for Policy Research  and Development  Solutions (CPRDS).

Dr. Kilongkilong said the he inspired his student by saying, “You don’t need to have a good grades for you to invent; all you need is creativity”.

“The whole experience was fun and challenging because we have pushed our limits to do what we have to do. There was no dull moments because we are very dedicated in what we do. We have combined our different ideas that lead to the creation of the utility model,” Tampus said.

He added that it’s an honor  to the Department of Industrial Engineering to have the first to achieve recognition thru the Utility Model.

Other chairmen from the different departments were motivated to align a subject in the new curriculum (prospectus) which could help the students to innovate. The College of Engineering is looking forward for more utility models to be made.
