The news team from Department of Journalism and Communications emerged as the champion of the Campus Patrol Competition held last August 31 at SM Seaside Cebu City.
The University of the Philippines Cebu ranked second while St. Theresa’s College (STC) placed third.
Michaela Dolores, the floor director of the team revealed that having different class schedules had been the biggest challenge they had to overcome before and during the competition.
“Time management was probably our biggest challenged. We had different schedules and most of the members of the team were graduating so they had a lot to focus on,” Dolores said.
Despite this, the members were able to cope with the time conflict and did their best to maximize the time allocated for practice.
Campus Patrol is an annual competition that envisioned Mass Communication students to prepare themselves and get exposed in the media industry. Contestants’ underwent newsroom engagement to enable the adjudicators to assess their expertise on recent social issues that provide a realistic perspective.
During the competition, Dolores disclosed that the team focused on the presentation’s content and delivery.
“The one thing we focused on during this year’s Campus Patrol was the stories we present to our audience. We were given a longer prep time than usual, so we used that for story conferences, choosing and deciding which stories best fit our theme and which stories are as close to our reality as possible,” she said.
For special awards, Vance Roa of St. Theresa’s College (STC) bagged the title of News Anchor of the Year while STC’s Adrian Villaganas was announced as Reporter of the Year after a toss coin was made to break the tie against USJ-R’s Shiela Mae Gumapon.
The broadcasting tilt was hosted by ABS-CBN Cebu as part of its 28th anniversary celebration of the TV Patrol Central Visayas in collaboration with the Cebu Alliance of Mass Communication Students (CAMMS), a confederation of MassCom student around Cebu.
Other schools that participated were Cebu Normal University, Benedicto College, University of the Visayas, University of San Carlos, and Cebu Technological University.
